In 3rd grade Sam auditioned for the Nashville Boy Choir, part of the Vanderbilt Children’s Chorus, and performed until we moved away from there to join Graham 5 years ago.  It was a marvelous experience under the direction of Hazel Sommerville, a patient woman who managed to take the untrained but sweet voices of very young boys and build their abilities so profoundly that they were invited to tour in Germany!

During our short stay in Colorado, Sam sang with the Pueblo Children’s Choir, directed by Jennifer Peters. His voice was changing and he had his last solo as a soprano.

He then went through the great deepening process and took some time off, singing quietly in his room but not performing again until his keyboard instructor at school urged him to move to the Concert Choir in Novemeber, and then audition for All State Choir in December.

We didn’t know if he had been accepted for weeks and I had to assume he had been for the purpose of planning our College Road Trip. And then we knew.

  1. It was a marvelous concert. Even more so since the group of 255 students had less than two days to come together and rehearse a challenging set of pieces under a conductor they had never met. They did have the music for a few weeks prior to go over with their music teachers back at their home high schools. By the way, all 5 pieces on the program were done from memory!

  2. Gunta says:

    Way to go, Sam!
