Many of my friends follow Kosher diet rules and this can make travel from home a bit difficult. While some people will eat in non-Kosher restaurants by limiting their choices to vegetarian dishes, others arrange to travel only in areas where they know people they can visit. It’s time for them to realize they can GO GO GO!!! Custom trip planning can take an issue like Kosher dietary restrictions, like any dietary requests into account and the world can open up.
There are a number of Bed and Breakfast inns that keep Kosher rules under the supervision of a local Rabbi. One, the Admiral Benbow Inn in Newport, Rhode Island, is located a few blocks away from the Truro Synagogue, the oldest temple in the United States. Established in 1658, it became a National Historic Site in 1946.
A visit to Newport, of course, is not just about Judaica and it would be foolish to assume that people who keep Kosher are interested only in Jewish things. Newport has a lot to do and see, including the “cottages” of the 19th Century wealthy, many of which are open as museums. The Breakers, rebuilt for Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1893, is open year-round. The world renown Newport Jazz Festival is held annually each August.
